Small retailer shipping service Weengs clinches £2.2m

Same day packaging and shipping service will use funding to expand across London and into Europe

Weengs, the small business shipping solution featured in Just Started last year, has secured £2.2m in seed funding from LocalGlobe, Cherry Ventures and Seedcamp.

Founded in 2015, Weengs is an app that allows small retailers and online sellers to take a picture of an item and add a destination to arrange for one of the company’s ‘Angels’ to collect “within an hour” and take it to a warehouse to be professionally packaged and shipped.

Charged a flat pickup fee of £5 plus shipping rates, the platform currently serves all central London postcodes and most of zone three. Frequent customers can opt for a plan that includes free pickups and reduced shipping rates.

Having already secured a partnership with People’s Champion finalist Trouva – an online destination for independent shops and boutiques – Weengs will use the finance to expand across London and launch in another European city.

Alex Christodoulou, co-founder of Weengs, said: “With our technology, packing expertise and equipment, we make it possible for independent retailers to sell and ship things they would have never considered before.

“We’ve shipped things from a ceramic gramophone to a fully constructed Lego Death Star ship. We offer premium logistics to the little guys, so that they can focus on building their business.”

Robin Klein, founding partner of LocalGlobe, said: “The Weengs collection service could revolutionise shipping in the way that Uber has transformed taxis. We expect that it will appeal in cities across Europe that are rapidly adopting online shopping as a way of life.”
