Starting a business in Edinburgh: Personalised Bottles
The Edinburgh Bottle branding start-up discusses how there is no "way in which Edinburgh could offer more opportunities for someone wanting to start up a business"
Company name: Personalised Bottles
Founder: Stuart Ebdy
Description: We brand and personalised bottles of alcohol in house, either as gifts for consumers or to make corporate events more branded and memorable. Our main products include beer, cider, wine, Prosecco, champagne as well as spirits. We either sell these on their own or as part of a Scottish hamper, to create a unique and thoughtful gift.
What’s great about starting a business in Edinburgh?
As an online company that dispatches to customers throughout the whole of the UK, Edinburgh is the perfect part of Scotland for us to be based. We are able to source the finest food and drink from around the country, and dispatch up to 6pm for next day delivery anywhere in the UK.
What business support in the city have you used? How was it?
We have really benefitted from the Entrepreneurial Spark business space in the city. This has opened our networking and business development opportunities. It is also a great way to collaborate and share ideas with other local businesses.
The local alcohol licensing authority were also amazingly helpful when we went through the premises licence application process.
Name the top three reasons to set up a business in Edinburgh:
- The great support from Entrepreneurial Spark
- The fantastic networking opportunities
- The shipping flexibility – our courier allows us to dispatch really late, yet guarantees next day UK wide delivery
Where could Edinburgh be better / what more does it need?
We honestly cannot think of any way in which Edinburgh could offer more opportunities for someone wanting to start up a business.
How easy has it been to access finance to grow?
We launched in April with a significant loan from RBS. It took a while for us to properly explain our business idea and vision, but to our surprise, they were delighted to assist us – a reason to believe that the banks are indeed supporting new Scottish businesses.
Where do you go to network in the city?
We are not big face-to-face networkers these days. But thinking about it, Entrepreneurial Spark has actually introduced us to so many new people, so we would class that as networking.
Where do you take a client for a business lunch/ meeting?
We always like meeting in places a bit different from the norm. Our favourite place to take someone who seems laid back is a place called Wings Edinburgh. They sell chicken wings, and beer. That’s it, but they do it really well and it breaks down the barriers to business if you meet somewhere fun and real.
Where’s great for a company night out?
Probably start at “the Caley Sample room” for something nice to eat. After that there are so many fun places in town. Sometimes the Grassmarket and high street near Edinburgh castle are fun. However if you’re wanting a posh yet fun night out, the George street area has some really nice bar and clubs.
