Startups top 20 miPic closes £174,920 on Crowdcube

App won Virgin 2014 Pitch2Ritch competition in innovation category

Global social platform and Startups top 20 company miPic has secured £174,920 in an overfunded round on crowdfunding website Crowdcube to accelerate further expansion.

Founded in 2014 by chartered architect Carl Thomas, the London based app allows its users to monetise images taken on their mobile by uploading them to the platform’s gallery for a global audience. Images can then be customised and transformed into framed artwork, canvases and phone covers, with commission incentives for sellers.

The app beat 450 competitors to win the innovation award at the 2014 Pitch2Ritch competition, judged by Richard Branson, winning a £5,000 investment and enrolment to The Accelerator Academy.

The investment will go towards growing the app’s international user base, launching on other mobile platforms and launching its first bricks and mortar store in London.

Discussing the achievement in its company newsletter, miPic founder Thomas said: “To the people who have supported us since launching in BETA last year, your encouragement, your competition votes and finally your investment in our team give us the added tenacity to move forward…

“Launching this bedroom start-up project has been a life changing experience and a roller coaster ride that continues into 2015.”
