Startups unveils index of Top 20 businesses launched in 2013

List of the UK’s most pioneering start-ups from this year announced today

The year is drawing to a close and having covered the launches of some fantastic new businesses, Startups.co.uk has assembled a prestigious list of the top 20 most exciting and disruptive talent to emerge in 2013.

From burger delivery to pop-up rental space to mobile data targeting, the index represents the best start-ups that this country has to offer and highlights the game-changing products and services to have come out of the past year.

Selected on the grounds of originality and their potential for success, these 20 new businesses are a shining example of how a fledgling idea can become a fast-growth business with one company featured, Sportlobster, having already attracted an impressive $1.75m funding and support from sports stars including former-England striker Michael Owen, and Formula 1 Red Bull driver Mark Webber.

The index also includes brand new mobile payment business Ensygnia which launched this month and is already set for big things after raising a staggering $3.3m seed investment before it had even brought its offering to market.

The entrepreneurs behind this year’s chosen companies succeed the brilliant talent which formed our list last year, including Chris Reiche and Nick Dear whose innovative loan service Iwoca saw them awarded Young Gun status four months ago.

Arguably the most notable founder featured in 2012’s index was 17-year old Nick D’Aloisio of news summarising app Summly, who, just three months after appearing in the index, sold his business to Yahoo for a reported £19m.

The Top 20 start-ups of 2013 are sure to follow in the footsteps of their predecessors and we expect to hear much more from them in the year ahead. View the full index here.
