Very simply, what does your tech start-up do?

  • The Esplorio iOS app lets you automatically check in to your favourite places, map out your routes via GPS, and upload your photos into a beautiful digital travel journal.
  • The app uses less battery power than any other app of it’s kind, doesn’t need roaming data to record trips and keeps all your data private, until you say otherwise.
  • Esplorio also lets you create trips from the past by importing content from Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Foursquare, Flickr and your iPhone camera roll.

Tell us why there’s a need – what do you disrupt?

There is currently no way to record your travels with a sufficient level of detail (routes, places and photos) without either compromising battery life or causing your roaming data bill to skyrocket.

Traveller journeys are rich in context and narrative, but much of this is lost when photos are simply uploaded into a Facebook album. Current solutions to these problems, such as using a combination of social media networks and GPS tracking devices, require a fair amount of time and effort and are not suited to the general traveller.

Are you funded?

Yes. We raised $300,000 from Akash Gupta (founder and CTO of robotics company GreyOrange), Elliot Mackenzie (founder of MachineForest Ltd), and the Startup Funding Club.

We’re also backed by the University of Oxford Software incubator, the European Space Agency Business Incubator, and the London TravelTech lab.

What’s the back-story?

The project was born out of Tim Fernando’s continuing frustration at a lack of easy-to-use tools to track his travels.

When visiting Sri Lanka with his then fiancée, Fernando wanted to find a remote turtle hatchery that he had been to and had recorded using existing networks but could not find it on his phone. Even though Fernando knew that the photo and information he was looking for was somewhere and the amount of difficulty in finding the specifics led him to want to create an easier way.

Esplorio started out as a pet project that let users create ‘trips’ (a snapshot of their travels) by importing content from social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Foursquare, Flickr and Tripit. The mobile app was born out of demand from users, and the team, wanting a more direct way of recording these trips.

What’s the best thing about where you’re based?

We are based out of the awesome accelerator; London Traveltech lab. It has a gorgeous view of Tower Bridge, shares the same floor as the Mayor of London’s London & Partners (which is perfect for a travel start-up), and we’re surrounded by other travel start-ups and people who are very helpful.

Also, they have an iPad controlled coffee machine!
