Joining Silicon Roundabout at 53 years old, Suzanne Noble tells Startups about her event app for Londoners on a budget...
Company name: Frugl Limited
Founders: CEO – Suzanne Noble (53), CTO – Tikiri Hulugalle (36)
Background: Noble – PR director for 20 years, Hulugalle – web design and development for over 10 years
Based in: Innovation Warehouse, Farringdon
Very simply, what does your tech start-up do?
- Frugl is a free to download iOS app that was released mid-March 2014
- The ONLY events discovery app aimed at helping people on a budget find affordable things to do
- Frugl connects low cost and free event promoters AND businesses with their audience on mobile devices
Tell us why there’s a need – what do you disrupt?
There are many websites, apps and blogs all dedicated to showcasing events and offers in London. In fact the space is so crowded, it’s almost impossible to separate low cost from premium events without extensive searching.
So where’s the opportunity?
1) For the users to find affordable things to do, quickly and easily
2) For the event promoters to find these users
3) For Frugl to bring these parties together and ultimately derive some revenue from that
Are you funded?
Frugl has been entirely self-funded using my own capital but we’re now seeking to raise £150,000 investment under the Seed Enterprise Investment Scheme (SEIS). We also received an innovation voucher from the government in 2013.
What were you doing before starting?
For over 20 years, I was a PR Director working with many of the biggest names in the music business. During this time I organised events, promoted events and dealt with hundreds of event promoters and venue owners. I bring knowledge of the events industry combined with a keen love of finding under-the-radar things to do and bargains to Frugl.
Our CTO, Hulagalle, has over 10 years web design and development experience.
We recently appointed Mike Miller as CFO. Mike is a chartered accountant and previously worked as the finance director of a public company in the music business for 10 years. Mike has a wealth of experience of running businesses both operationally and financially and has raised over £300m of debt and equity.
What the best thing about where you’re based?
We have been based out of Innovation Warehouse for the past 12 weeks. It’s a great place to meet and share experiences with other start-ups. We’ve enjoyed getting to know other techy people and have learned a huge amount from the Accelerator Academy programme that we have participated in.
