Tech Pitch: Impression Digital

The Nottingham-based digital marketing start-up explains why it’s disrupting older ‘media-type’ agencies…

Company name: Impression Digital
Founders: Aaron Dicks (24) and Tom Craig (28)
Background: Web development and digital marketing
Based in: Nottingham

Very simply, what does your tech start-up do?

  • Impression Digital is a full-service digital marketing agency
  • SEO & Digital PR
  • Content marketing
  • Web design
  • Pay-per-click advertising

Tell us why there’s a need – what do you disrupt?

We’re a young agency disrupting those older ‘media-type’ agencies that aren’t digital natives. We’re nimble, we’re completely flexible and we’re growing much faster than the industry baseline (roughly 20% annual paid-for media spend growth) in what is already a really high growth industry.

Are you funded?

We’re actually entirely profit funded through organic growth. We’re not actively looking for investment but we have got some ambitious growth plans, so we’ll see what the future holds.

What were you doing before starting?

Dicks: I was a self-trained website programmer and digital marketer, learning my trade within one of the UK’s largest independent multilingual search agencies. I’d also gained a lot of experience in freelance and contract roles during and after university.

Craig: Before university I trained as a systems developer for one of the world’s largest engineering consultancies. After my degree I became head of marketing for a renewable energy firm, leading its marketing strategy and helping it grow its turnover from £6m to £30m in under four years.

After graduating from university and working together, we saw there was a need in Nottingham and the wider East Midlands region for an agile digital marketing firm. And so Impression Digital was formed.

What’s the best thing about where you’re based?

There’s more than just one. Firstly there are two world-class universities right on our doorstep for sourcing new talent, not to mention all the other great recruitment potential we’ve got around here to choose from.

Nottingham’s got great transport links to London, Birmingham and Leeds, so we’re within easy reach of our clients nationwide. There’s a really young digital marketing ecosystem in the city, with lots of growing businesses around us to network with, and growth schemes launched by local authorities and universities mean there’s now plenty of help out there for start-ups in the city.
