Tech Pitch: Steamhaus
Having sold his first company for £7m, techpreneur Daniel Keighron-Foster shares plans for his new venture - a cloud hosting and network consultancy
Company name: Steamhaus
Founder: Daniel Keighron-Foster (33)
Background: Keighron-Foster founded Melbourne Server Hosting aged 18 while studying for a business degree at Leeds Met University. He grew the business to a team of 40 before selling to Iomart plc in 2012 for £7m.
Based in: Manchester’s Northern Quarter
Very simply, what does your tech start-up do?
Steamhaus is a cloud consultancy. We work with digital and creative agencies, online retailers, app developers and high traffic websites to source, design, build, maintain and manage their cloud set-up.
Tell us why there’s a need – what do you disrupt?
Businesses shouldn’t have to get bogged down trying to find and maintain the right cloud hosting solution. Steamhaus takes away the hassle, working in sync with brands and agencies to provide a cost-effective, highly available and scalable hosting solution – which frees our clients up to focus on their core business.
The big difference is that we’re not a hosting company. That means we’re not restricted by any particular environment or tied to one single hosting provider. We go further than traditional management packages; managing the operating system and your website or application to ensure there’s no grey area of responsibility. Whether it’s designing and building the perfect environment for your site, or simply providing peace of mind, we sort it.
Are you funded?
I personally invested £500,000 when we launched in October 2015. Being self-funded puts us in a really nice position as we’re not reliant on any third party to give us the nod when it comes to deciding how the company progresses.
It also means that we’ve got more of a say when it comes to company structure, including the ability to give all of our staff significant equity.
What were you doing before starting?
My background’s always been in cloud. I founded Melbourne Server Hosting as a start-up back in 2000 before selling in 2012. I took a three year break from the industry shortly after selling but was keen to return to the world of cloud last year.
One thing led to another and before we knew it, Steamhaus had launched!
What’s the best thing about where you’re based?
The Northern Quarter is a great little cluster of start-up incubators, business centres and renovated mills, as well as being one of the city’s best spots for bar and restaurant openings! There’s very much a ‘pop in for a brew’ ethos between neighboring businesses. Everyone wants to see each other do well.
