Tech Pitch: World of Wedmin
With the "wedding industry crying out for disruption", we find out more about the new niche comparison site muscling in on the tech start-up space...
Company name: World of Wedmin
Founders: Robin Weil (25)
Background: Founder of student music agency, Music Students For Hire
Based in: London
Very simply, what does your tech start-up do?
World of Wedmin is the UK’s first wedding supplier comparison site. Couple’s use our unique search tool to find and compare wedding suppliers by location, availability, price and reviews.
World of Wedmin offers a time and cost efficient way to plan a wedding based on the highly successful comparison website model.
Tell us why there’s a need – what do you disrupt?
The wedding industry is crying out for a bit of disruption! Despite being a multi billion pound industry the wedding planning scene remains a touch archaic in its methods and practices. World of Wedmin is aimed at the modern, tech savvy couple who use the internet and technology to inform every major purchasing they make; we feel their wedding should be no exception.
What’s more, our unique business model makes for a rather economically friendly advertising solution for registered suppliers, a ‘pay as you go’ advertising platform. With many wedding suppliers operating as micro-businesses this is very appealing to their limited marketing budgets.
Are you funded?
After an initial round of angel investment last year, we’re now in the middle of a crowdfunding campaign.
What were you doing before starting?
Whilst studying music at Manchester University I set up my own music agency Music Students for Hire which provides live music for over 300 events (including lots of weddings) around the country every year. The agency has grown over the last four years and now has a national base of over 1,000 young musicians.
What’s the best thing about where you’re based?
We’re currently office hopping around central London and, as such, have had the opportunity to meet many an interesting investor, tech wiz and all round useful people! We are, however, currently in talks with a fantastic new start-up incubator based in Soho, so watch this space! It will be so great for us to be around other energetic tech start-ups just like us!
