The Great British Startups Cup 2014: Group G

Meet the taxi and minicab squads in our penultimate group

Following in the footsteps of brands such as Hailo and Uber, an army of taxi and minicab start-ups have emerged to battle it out for glory in this fast-growing sector.

Meet the latest contenders all headed for success, but who will score the ultimate winning goal?

Bounce

Launched by Young Gun Nicko Williamson, following his previous success with eco-friendly taxi firm Climatecars, the Bounce app allows users to book their “nearest TfL licensed minicab instantly”. By cutting out traditional minicab companies, the app offers a fixed fare which claims to be up 40% less than a black cab. With a firm focus on quality control – Bounce claims passenger safety is its number one priority – safe and reasonable journeys can be booked in just two taps.

Justaxi

Available on Android and iOS, users can “compare, book and save” minicabs with the Justaxi app. Founded by Fareed Baloch, the app claims to be both fast and flexible – users can find the best taxi prices in just 60 seconds and payment can be made via PayPal, card or cash. Working only with “the best taxi operators”, the social app lets you book “your journey, your way”, saving you money in the process.

Minicabit

As the first ever app to secure funding on Dragons’ Den – founder Amer Hasan secured £75,000 for his taxi price comparison site and mobile app – minicabit enables you to compare and book real-time quotes from cab providers for long distance and local trips across 30 UK cities on web and mobile. With cab operators setting their rates on the minicabit system upfront, when a customer books a quote, the start-up charges a 10% commission and a £1 booking fee.

Formerly known as Anycabs, price comparison site Minicabster is “mini on prices, big on service”. Helping thousands of people get around the UK, the site enables users to save money instantly, with quotes available from over 10,000 licensed minicabs. With the option to choose drivers based on their star rating, a range of payment methods and the ability to book in just a couple of clicks, Minicabster makes booking a taxi simple.
