12 days of start-ups: Cauli Rice
The low carb cauliflower-based rice alternative
Founders: Gem Misa and Jamie Harris
Launched: September 2015
Despite their high calorie-count and association with blood sugar spikes, starchy carbohydrates are a major feature on the contemporary dinner plate – which is why it’s so hard to give them up completely.
And it’s also why low carb alternatives are becoming big business. Following the courgetti craze, founders of Cauli Rice Gem Misa and Jamie Harris think consumers are ready for the next big faux carb: cauliflower rice. The long-life, microwaveable product is vegan, gluten and preservative free, full of fibre and contains over 60% fewer calories than white rice.
Currently available in Tesco, Waitrose, ASDA and a number of independents, the rice comes in four flavours: lemongrass and chili, original, Mediterranean and Indian Pilau.
The brand, which was a finalist in the Virgin Media Business Pitch to Rich, has already raised over £2m through crowdfunding and is currently involved in the Virgin Start-Up Foodpreneur project. Following the success of their first health food business Righteous, which launched in 2010 and sells products in UK and US supermarkets, this husband and wife team are no strangers to running a food start-up, putting them in good stead for this next exciting venture.
