12 days of start-ups: Pip & Nut
The all natural and nutritious nut butter brand
Founder: Pip Murray
Launched: January 2015
“Putting the nut back into nut-trition” since January this year is all natural nut butter brand Pip & Nut.
When searching for natural sources of protein to fuel her training, marathon runner Pip Murray spotted an opportunity to transform nut butter spreads from a simple sandwich spread to a nutrient rich mass-market product.
Pip & Nut produces a range of spreads including honey cinnamon cashew, almond butter and peanut butter, available in jars or portable squeeze packs. Using no palm oil, preservatives, additives or refined sugar and with a keen eye for effective branding, the company is targeting a younger, more health conscious consumer.
After over a year of planning and a brief stint in a garden shed, the London-based brand has secured listings in a number of the UK’s major retailers including Sainsbury’s, Marks & Spencer and Ocado, as well as premium stores like Selfridges, Wholefoods and Fortnum & Mason.
Backed by £200,000 in private and equity crowdfunding, Pip & Nut has achieved nearly £600,000 turnover – less than a year after launch. Having got so far with just a two strong team and with a new hire on the cards for January 2016, we’ll be watching closely to see what 2016 will bring for this innovative product business.
