Top new businesses of 2016: CityMunch
The food tech start-up offering discounted meals to diners
Founder: Robert Lynch
Launched: February 2016
Enabling restaurants to offer discount prices to users when short of diners, CityMunch’s USP is a crowd please as it lets customers eat at a discounted price and gives restaurants the chance to increase trade during off-peak mealtimes.
Founded by Robert Lynch, who previously worked in investment, the CityMunch app was inspired by a conservation Lynch had with a restaurateur about the importance of turning as many tables as you can.
Through the app users, can avail of time-specific deals from restaurants in their area and just need to show the app on their phone (with discount on screen) when paying for their meal.
Now, 10 months after launch, London-based CityMunch has already expanded into Bristol and counts the likes of The Chancery, HOP Vietnamese, and Hummus Bros. as partners.
In a highly competitive market, yet hungry for success, CityMunch has also whet the appetite of takeaway of giants Just Eat. Chosen alongside four other start-ups, CityMunch was awarded a place on Just Eat’s first ever food tech accelerator.
This win involved a prize package of £20,000 investment in return for 5% equity, mentoring from the Just Eat team, and introductions to partners such as YFood, Dreamstake and Google – support that Lynch believes will help take CityMunch “to the next level” in 2017…
