Tell us what your business does:

Total Socials allows businesses to include all of their social media pages, Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn etc. in one place – making it easier to share your social media presence and for it to grow.

Where did the idea for your business come from?

Whilst working in marketing I came across a problem – I wanted to be able to find a business and all of its social media channels easily, so I could connect and interact with them, and this is what drove me to my idea.

How did you know there was a market for it?

I began my market research and realised that there was nothing like my website. It’s widely recognised now that social media should be a huge part of the marketing strategy for any business, so there is plenty of potential as more businesses look to improve their social media strategies.

What were you doing before starting up?

I was working in marketing at another business, mainly concentrating on online marketing with social media and blogging.

Have you always wanted to run your own business?

Yes, even from a really young age I knew I wanted to be my own boss, and having this idea has given me that opportunity.

How did you raise the money?

The money was raised through private funding from my family; this was a good option as it meant a more relaxed payback period with no interest and no share dilution. I remain the only shareholder.

What challenges have you faced and how have you overcome them?

My main challenge was finding the right website developer, as this is the entire business. I had many meetings with different agencies and got prices, but I eventually did not go with the lowest price. I chose a developer that really understood what I wanted.

Describe your business model and how you make money:

The business model is based upon people paying for premium accounts on the website to get more exposure for the social media of their business. I also have advertising space which will be sold to businesses.

What was your first big breakthrough?

My first big breakthrough was actually creating my business plan, once I had a sound plan in place I knew the rest would follow.

What advice would you give to budding entrepreneurs?

Go for it. If you have an idea that is viable and you believe in, as long as you put in the necessary effort, you can make it work. Always try and harvest the best from other people that you can, and don’t try and cut costs by doing everything on your own. Don’t be greedy.

Where do you want to be in five years’ time?

I want the business to be a vital part of marketing for all UK based businesses, but I also want to move into foreign markets, for example, Dubai, India, Australia among others.
