UK-based video distribution start-up acquires international content marketing platform

Deal set to accelerate Rightster’s planned European expansion of YouTube services across Europe

Video distribution and monetisation firm Rightster has bought content marketing platform Preview Networks.

Designed with the aim of optimising the commercial value of online video, Rightster is the new venture from serial entrepreneur Charlie Muirhead, who started software company Orchestream and by the age of 23 had raised $30m from prominent angel investors Terry Matthews, Esther Dyson, and Hermann Hauser.

Muirhead took Orchestream onto both the Nasdaq and London stock exchanges where its value rocketed to more than £1bn. Subsequently, he started angel investment network iGabriel, data communications firm Nexagent, and online television network t5m.

It is hoped the acquisition of international digital distribution services provider Preview Networks will boost London-based Rightster’s YouTube services across France, Spain, Italy, Germany and the Nordics.

With Preview Network’s client list including Disney, MTV, Peugeot and Sony, Rightster is also hoping to extend its offering to clients in the movie industry.

The acquisition follows Rightster’s recent deal with Australian Football League (AFL), which sees the firm developing new subscription service, live AFLTV.

Muirhead commented on the deal, which sees Preview Network’s management team joining Rightster. He said: “The acquisition of Preview Networks strengthens Rightster’s YouTube video syndication strategy by providing access to local networks in Europe and will allow us to extend the reach of our solutions for fashion, news and sports industries.”
