UK takeaway businesses worth £9bn to economy

Just Eat has launched British Takeaway Awards in response to news that takeaway industry now equates to 12.5% of the food services sector

UK takeaway businesses generated £9bn for the economy and supported over 220,000 jobs in 2014, analysis from the Centre for Economic and Business Research (Cebr) has found.

The research, commissioned by JUST EAT, reported “rapid growth” of Britain’s takeaway industry with £4bn in Gross Value Added (GVA) to the economy last year – equivalent to 12.5% of the entire food services sector.

The recent rise in takeaway restaurants means that the sector is now worth more than other popular service sectors such as design (£5.7bn) and hair and beauty (£4.7bn), and is approximately a third larger than the UK’s insurance industry with 153,000 full-time jobs compared to 98,100 full-time jobs.

In addition, Just Eat also reported rising demand for certain cuisines through its platform; Kurdish food was the fastest growing cuisine for 2014, Mongolian takeaways were the fastest growing cuisine in 2013 and demand for South African food was highest in 2012.

On the back of the research, and with the industry expected to generate an additional 30,000 jobs by 2020, Just Eat has announced that it is launching a new awards to celebrate Britain’s best independent takeaway businesses.

Taking place on November 9 at the Savoy, the British Takeaway Awards has 15 categories on offer including ‘best loved local takeaway restaurant’ and the overall prize of ‘best takeaway restaurant’ in Britain.

Graham Corfield, JUST EAT UK managing director, said: “We know takeaways contribute a huge amount to our culture but what many don’t realise is the enormous impact takeaway restaurants – often small, independent, and family-run – make to our economy.

Discussing the awards, Corfield continued:

“The takeaway sector rightly deserves to be recognised and championed as one of the key industries supporting small businesses across the UK and this is why JUST EAT has launched the British Takeaway Awards – the first ever multi-cuisine takeaway awards in the UK.
