Wahanda acquires app development consultancy for mobile-first strategy

The company’s Lemon Labs deal is the second Lithuanian acquisition after purchasing salon management system Salonium in 2012

European health and beauty marketplace Wahanda has acquired Lithuania-based app development consultancy, Lemon Labs as part of its mobile-first strategy.

Founded in 2008 by Lopo Champalimaud and headquartered in London, Wahanda allows customers to book appointments at more than 8,000 European spas and salons for discounted prices. The company claim to have grown 280% year-on-year and currently employ over 150 people across the continent.

The move comes at an exciting time for the company, having raised $26m in fresh funding last year and acquiring German competitor Salonmeister back in October – beginning its ambitious expansion plans to open in a further six European countries over the next six months.

With recent consumer research revealing that 60% online time is spent on mobile apps, the company will use Lemon Lab’s expertise to exploit this fact – unveiling a series of new design and product updates for iOS and Android in the coming weeks.

CEO Champalimaud commented: “We have been working with the Lemon Labs team for the past six months in building our consumer and business apps, and the results speak for themselves. Last week we broke through the 150,000 downloads mark, and that number is growing 20% month on month.

“The future of Wahanda is in mobile, and we are delighted the Lemon Labs team is now officially an integrated part of our technology team and can continue to lead our product thinking and development, to ensure we deliver the best possible mobile experience for our users.”

Co-founder of Lemon Labs, Tomas Dirvonskas said: “Wahanda’s bookings show that 50% of all hair and beauty appointments are now made via a mobile device, and that a fifth of consumers who make appointments now expect to be seen within three hours of making that booking.

“By becoming part of the in-house team we will be able to shape Wahanda’s product offering to an even greater degree, and help deliver on making Wahanda a truly mobile-first company.”
