Wayra announces search for new generation of digital start-ups
Latest iteration of leading tech accelerator programme to focus on ‘Internet of Things’
Leading European tech accelerator Wayra has announced a call for 50 digital start-ups to reward them with a place at one of its academies across Europe and South America.
Entrepreneurs from across the world have until 23 February to submit an application detailing their digital project for consideration.
Wayra said its focal point for the 2014 programme will be the ‘Internet of Things’, in particular connected sensors and devices applied to ‘smart cities’, ‘big data’ and mobile technologies, although it said this focus will not be exclusive.
After passing through an ‘exhaustive’ selection process, 50 businesses will be rewarded with a place on the 2014 accelerator programme, which provides financing, dedicated mentors, office space and networking opportunities in a six-month programme.
Places are available at seven Wayra academies across Europe and South America – Madrid, Barcelona, London, Caracas, Bogota and Buenos Aires. Four places are available on the London programme.
Started in April 2011 by European telecoms giant O2/Telefonica, Wayra has become one of Europe’s leading tech accelerators, receiving around twenty thousand applications and financing more than 315 new companies.
The total investment has been around €43m, with €13m contributed by Telefonica and €30m from outside financing.
