Established in 1982, YFM Equity Partners specialises in seed, early-stage and late-stage investments across four funds; its Investment and Co-Investment Fund, two British Smaller Companies Funds, and an EIS fund. It claims to be the UK’s most active investor is small and medium enterprises.

With a goal to “transform small businesses”, YFM Equity looks to back small firms with ambitious management teams, innovative approaches and the scope to become a niche market leader. It makes investments of up to £1om and typically backs companies in the retail, healthcare, software and IT industries and has a portfolio of over 50 businesses and growing.

Scottish fashion brand Ness raised £2.5m in April this year from YFM Equity to support the launch of new stores across the country. Established in 1997, Ness specialises in womenswear and has 11 stores nationwide, generating £5m turnover. Speaking at the time, Ness co-founder Gordon MacAulay said they chose to raise finance from YFM “as they have a proven track record of rolling out retail stores in the UK.”
