Young entrepreneurs: Simon Crowther, Flood Protection Solutions

The 22-year-old protecting homes and businesses across the UK as the sole distributor of the Water-Gate flood defence barrier

Name: Simon Crowther
Company: Flood Protection Solutions and Skyrocket Solutions
Age: 22

Simon Crowther’s interest in flood resistance and resilience began when his family home was flooded in 2007. While researching flood defence, he came across a Canadian company that developed and sold the Water-Gate barrier – five years later, it saved his family home from flooding.

Suitably impressed, and unable to believe the UK had no equivalent, the enterprising then 18-year-old contacted the manufacturer to see if he could become the sole UK distributor. A meeting with the owner in Paris secured the licence, and in 2012, Crowther launched Flood Protection Solutions.

In the last four years, the now 22-year-old entrepreneur has run the business whilst studying Civil Engineering at the University of Nottingham. Already profitable, Flood Protection Solutions now provides the Water-Gate barrier to local residents, businesses, water companies and power companies – and is on target to turnover £750,000 in 2016.

In 2014, Thames Water ordered half a mile of the product, with plans to purchase more and create strategic depots across the South of England. This could represent the first step towards Crowther’s goal of replacing the ineffective sandbag as the UK’s flood protection product of choice.

Buoyed by the success of his first business, the young entrepreneur has also turned his hand to a new venture, Skyrocket Solutions: a company that uses social media support to help technical, engineering and manufacturing businesses bridge the gap between their technical and marketing departments.

Crowther is clearly passionate about what he does – even giving a talk on the effect of rising sea levels in the UK at the 2015 Flood Expo in October 2015 – and as well as making profit, his company is addressing a serious and costly problem for homeowners and businesses across the country. Impressive stuff.
