Picsel produces technology that aims to bring “content to life” on mobile phones, and has secured contracts with manufacturers such as Samsung to deliver on its promise.

The company says there are about 160 million handsets in the UK that feature its technology, and that this is only set to increase.

The Glasgow-based business conducts most of its trade overseas, mainly in Japan and Korea, although there are many handsets in the UK and Europe that use its technology. Picsel also has a better claim than most to being an international business, as its 220-strong team is comprised of no less than 15 different nationalities.

The company’s success is, of course, closely related to its innovative technology, but founder Imran Khand says it is not down to this alone. “We have fostered a culture of innovation that remains unchanged from its earliest years,” he says. “This has helped us as we have grown from a handful of engineers in Glasgow to several hundred employees globally.”

Mobile technology is likely to become far more sophisticated over the next few years, and Khand is keen that his business is at the heart of this development.

“The industry as a whole still has a lot of work to do before the user interface of a phone is where it needs to be,” he says. “Rather than targeting niche areas like web browsing and file viewing, Picsel is taking a more holistic approach aimed at the whole user experience.”
