Why have we got a Family Business of the Year category?

Businesses have long been a family affair – especially when it comes to trades.

Think of the UK’s great heritage of family-run butchers, bakers and candlestick makers on our high streets.

It’s hardly surprising: The fact is there’s no one more likely to share your business vision and values than your own flesh and blood (or spouse).

Whether you’re a mother and daughter duo, father and son, brothers and sisters in business, or a couple running a business, the Startups Awards Family Business of the Year category recognises high-potential start-ups whose founders are balancing work and personal life to achieve start-up success.

Enter your start-up here to be in with a chance of winning the Startups Awards Family Business of the Year!

Although this is the inaugural year for the category, the Startups Awards has a long history of celebrating superb family run businesses.

There’s Joe & Seph’s, the gourmet popcorn brand run by husband and wife Joseph and Jacqueline Sopher and their son Adam.

Frog Bikes, the kid’s bike company founded by husband-and-wife duo Jerry and Shelley Lawson, scooped Export Business of the Year in 2012; and last year’s Service Business of the Year Ventro Group, was started by fraternal entrepreneurs Harvey and Ross Melvin.

What are we looking for in a Family Business of the Year entrant?

Mother and son. Sisters. Brothers. Husband and husband. Wife and Wife. Wife and husband. Grandfather, granddaughter. Or even a family of seven.

It doesn’t matter who’s in your family-run business as long as that’s just what it is: a family business.

We’re looking for familial founding teams running disruptive and exciting young businesses that love working together.

Additionally, in order to be eligible your family-run business must:

  • Have started to trade no earlier than 1 August 2014 and no later than 31 July 2017
  • Be ‘independently owned’
  • Be UK based
  • Be able to give credible examples of their excellent potential, based on revenue growth, profitability, and major client wins

Why you should enter the Family Business of the Year?

This is your chance to do your family proud and receive validation from an illustrious panel of Startups Awards judges including founder and CEO of Mumsnet Justine Roberts, Vita Coco EMEA CEO Giles Brook, and the co-founder of innocent drinks and JamJar Investments, Jon Wright, among others.

That’s not to mention that businesses can leverage a major PR boost off their win, featuring on Startups.co.uk, as well as our social media channels and in press releases pushed out to national media.

This could lead to more customers, increased revenue, and could even help you land a new investor.

Winners and finalists of the category will also receive a template press release to boost media coverage and a logo for brand marketing.
