Sam Barnett started Struq at the height of the recession and, unable to get a loan or overdraft to fund the launch, set up the business on a debt of £2,000 that was owed to him. After some particularly perilous early days, Struq’s clients now include a raft of household names, such as Ted Baker, French Connection, Swiftcover and John Lewis. Barnett credits surviving the downturn to creating a culture and focus that enabled the business to grow by an impressive 944% from 2009 to 2010, accumulating a multi-million pound turnover along the way. At the same time the company has developed pioneering machine-learning technology which has changed the face of online display advertising.
