Are houses that “just work” for day-to-day living too much to ask? Bedrooms you can actually fit wardrobes into, logical room layouts, enough space to live inside and out? And which also have great curb appeal?

Nicky Gordon realised that, frustratingly, there was a gap in the market for highly practical, aesthetically pleasing homes. His vision was to launch a house-building company that led the way in creating modern, welcoming, high-specification new-build developments in Cumbria and Lancashire. And so Genesis Homes was born.

And it seems the concept is resonating with the people in the region. Having launched the first development 2017 thanks to £2m of development finance from a local building society, Genesis Homes is now on track to meet a target of building 200 homes per year by 2022.

The success of the business and calibre of its founder have been recognised several times within the housing sector and wider UK business scene. In 2019, Gordon was shortlisted for ‘Young Entrepreneur of the Year’ and Genesis Homes for ‘Best New Business’ by the In-Cumbria 2019 Business Awards. Gordon was also appointed Chairman of Cumbrian House Builders Group in the same year.

Genesis Homes is now on track to meet a target of building 200 homes per year by 2022.

Could these high-spec, energy efficient new builds be the answer to the very real housing and climate crises we’re facing? That may be a stretch, but the interest and demand that’s propelled Genesis Home’s growth so far suggests there’s untapped potential beyond the counties of Cumbria and Lancashire – and perhaps beyond the UK.
