We're cheating a little with this one, as the children's online game is part of Mind Candy, set up in a couple of year earlier. But there's good reason to bend the rules. Moshi Monsters, launched in 2006, allows children to raise online pet monsters which are not only fun, but also create puzzles that develop the child's vocabulary, logic and other skills. The social networking side of the site is closely monitored for safety and parents have full control of what information is on display. The site is free to use, but a range of merchandise and Moshi accessories are available to buy.
