Listed twice on our Startups 100 index and a Service Business of the Year finalist in 2013 at our Startups Awards, PetShopBowl.co.uk’s young founders claim to have built the “UK’s friendliest online shop”, but their proposition has delivered much more than smiles and charm. The e-commerce business, which sells pet food online direct to pet owners (offering savings on over 10,000 pet supplies) and via a smart “bottomless bowl” automatic subscription model, started with a modest £5,000 Prince’s Trust loan three years ago and can now boast around 100,000 customers, helping to drive impressive revenues of £3m in 2013.

Founders Adam Taylor and Lexi Tamasan marked a major coup this year when PetShopBowl secured a £250,000 grant from the Rural Growth Network, which will be used to launch the site into the hugely lucrative £30bn European pet food market. The profitable company will also be launching its own affordable premium dog food brand later this year as the founders look to increase revenue to £5m.
