Necessary, but often frustrating and cumbersome, background checking job applicants is a formality that most companies have to endure. Having experienced the tedious process themselves, young entrepreneurs Husayn Kassai, Eamon Jubbawy and Ruhul Amin knew the market was ripe for disruption.

In August 2012, using funding from Oxford University, Kassai, Jubbawy and Amin founded Startups 100 listed Onfido, a data-driven, automated online background checker. The service verifies an applicant’s identity, right to work and criminal history, and claims to save 60% on traditional methods. With over 1,000 customers using the platform, Onfido lists major brands like The Independent, Hays and Morgan McKinley as clients, as well as start-ups like Deliveroo and Hassle (both former Young Guns award winners).

With backing from Wellington Partners, CrunchFund and angel investors such as Brent Hoberman and Dan Cobley, the trio are said to be the youngest founders in London to raise $4.5m in Series A funding. Having already launched its service in 28 countries, and with plans to invest heavily in technology and further expansion, the start-up is set to become a truly global business over the next 12 months.
