Here at Startups, we’ve compiled the first definitive ranking of the UK’s best markets to help you find the perfect place to start your business.

With data available for 723 markets, we used a scoring system to compare six key data points to determine the index. The full methodology is at the bottom of this page, or click here to jump straight to it.

Listed below in order of ranking (Camden was our top spot market), the following table allows you to look at name, location, market type, no. of stalls and days open and should serve as a comprehensive resource to help you find your nearest market.

The UK’s best markets: Methodology

To determine which markets are the best in the UK we focused on six key data points:

1. How many days the market is open
2. Tripadvisor review ratings
3. How popular the market is on Instagram
4. Accessibility: How many train / tube stops there are within a 10min walk of the market
5. Accessibility: How many car parks there are within a 10min walk of the market
6. The number of stalls available to visitors

These data points were then weighted in terms of how important they are to a visitor’s experience of the market:

1. Days open: 30% – Customers should be able to visit markets on a day that suits them best
2. Tripadvisor rating: 23% – Customers want a top quality market experience, one that other people would recommend
3. Instagrammability: 22% – If anything ‘cool’ happens it ends up on Instagram and millennials the world over travel far and wide to get the perfect instagram shot – we’ve included the ‘instagrammability factor’ as a good indication of how photographic and trendy a market is
4. Train / tube stops: 10% – Accessibility is important to the customer’s market experience – there’s no point having a market that no one can get to
5. Car parks: 10% – Outside of London driving is often people’s main mode of transport and after visiting such fantastic markets you might just need that added boot space
6. Number of stalls: 5% – We’ve structured the study to value customer convenience and quality over quantity
