Sajid Javid, Conservative MP from Bromsgrove, has today been announced as the new secretary of state for business, innovation and skills.

Taking over the role from Vince Cable and beating rival Matt Hancock, Javid most recently served as the secretary of state for culture (2014-2015), minister for equalities (2014), financial secretary to The Treasury (2013-2014) and economic secretary (2012-2013).

The appointment follows the Conservatives majority win in the General Election last week.

The Association of Independent Professionals and the Self Employed (IPSE) has welcomed the appointment:

“Mr Javid has consistently shown an understanding and appreciation of the value of small businesses to the UK economy and we look forward to engaging with him on behalf of the UK’s four and a half million self-employed.

“We know Mr Javid cares passionately about improving the UK’s poor payment culture and we will actively engage with the new business secretary on the establishment of a small business conciliation service promised by the Conservative party in its manifesto.”
