The Mallow & Marsh story:

Handmade in Yorkshire is not a sentence you’d usually expect to be associated with marshmallows, but defying expectations is what premium marshmallow brand Mallow & Marsh is all about.

Started by Harriot Pleydell-Bouverie in 2013, Startups 100-listed Mallow & Marsh lays claim to being the largest slab marshmallow brand in the UK, selling grab-and-go bars and ‘hide-in-your desk’ sharing bags in flavours including coconut, vanilla, raspberry and chocolate. Its raspberry & dark chocolate bar won the Café Quality Food award for Sweet Treats, and its Coconut recipe has 2 Great Taste stars.

Its products are stocked in more than 3,000 stores nationwide including Starbucks, Sainsburys, Waitrose, Boots, and BP, as well as many independent farm shops, delis and cafes and the brand has teamed up with everything from yoghurt dips, and hot chocolate brands, to peanut butter spreads, Gu chocolate puds and even a smoked chilli paste.

The company recently embarked on its first experiential marketing campaign, placing a photo booth and sampling platform in three major London train stations. It was featured on Heart Radio and delivered more than 1,500 new consumers.

Mallow & Marsh is on a mission to challenge some of the larger corporates’ old fashioned and structured ways of working, and is aiming to develop talent and open up opportunities to people from all backgrounds and experience through its apprentice scheme.

Why Mallow & Marsh made our shortlist:

This brand has grown from a single founder with big ambitions to a 10-strong major player in the UK confectionary sector with a committed following of sweet-toothed fans – its customer loyalty rate is over 60% (a level unparalleled in the industry according to Mallow & Marsh). Set to increase employee headcount to 21 by the end of 2018, the company sees huge potential for further growth in sales and distribution.
