Conceived while co-founder Arthur Kay was studying architecture at The Bartlett, UCL, bio-bean collects London’s waste coffee grounds and converts them into advanced biofuels for the heating and transport industries.

Launched in 2013 with co-founder Benjamin Harriman, the innovative business has partnered with coffee waste producers and waste management services at every scale, to collect and transport waste coffee grounds to its 20,000 square foot processing facility.

The end product takes the form of biomass pellets, which can be used to heat buildings, and in the near future will be converted into biodiesel to fuel transport systems. Backed by £3m in funding, it’s clear investors and corporations alike have seen the potential of this unique green energy proposition, and the company is projecting strong turnover this year.

The burgeoning business has been endorsed by a myriad of significant organisations including Innovate UK, Shell and the Berkeley Group – and having obtained patent protection, bio-bean and its young founders have a monopoly on this highly lucrative resource.
