With recent coverage of NHS spending largely negative, a service that could save the organisation “millions of pounds” is sure to find favour in the medical community. Step forward Network Locum – the workplace management software business launched by former NHS consultant Melissa Morris.

Founded in 2012, the company connects clinicians and their employers on an online platform, providing workforce management, timesheet and payroll software, as well as a marketplace for doctors to help hospitals and GP practices fill shift gaps. Companies such as Uber can also use the platform to perform medical checks on their drivers.

To date, the service claims to have placed 3,000 locums, helping doctors earn £50m through the platform since launch, as well as signing up 10% of all GP practices in the UK, saving an average of £200,000 per hospital department per year and £20,000 per GP practice per year. This growth has been fuelled by £8.5m in funding, including a £5.3m investment from BGF Ventures in July, which helped Network Locum net £1.5m in revenues and get listed in Sherry Coutu’s ‘Scale Up Club’ – an index of UK start-ups with the potential to reach £100m turnover in the next three to five years.

Expecting to double turnover next year, the company’s bold aim is to “radically transform how the global healthcare profession works together”.
