App of the year

The Minicabit story:

A number of apps have sprung up in the last few years to capitalise on the UK’s £9bn taxi and minicab sector, but Amer Hasan’s app claims to be the only one that allows users to instantly compare and pre-book local and long distance trips, up to 12 months in advance.

A Startups 100 company, minicabit is aiming to corner the pre-booked segment of the online cab market, to style itself as the nation’s third network for out of town travel behind National Express and A big ambition no doubt, but having already secured lucrative deals with the likes of The O2 Arena, Big Yellow and Heathrow Airport, as well as a 650 strong network of licensed cab operators, it’s one that seems well within the London-based start-up’s reach.

The company takes a commission percentage on the cab operators’ fare, but both consumers and operators benefit from its unique proposition. Allowing users to compare quotes from both their location and destination – consumers are able to find the best deal and operators can secure additional custom from outside their usual area.

It’s no surprise minicabit was one of the first apps to win offers of investment on Dragons’ Den, and following recent partnerships with brands such as Barclays, it has the support it needs to capitalise on the shifting online cab market.

Why Minicabit made our 60:

Despite competition from wealthy rivals such as Uber, this stellar start-up is making waves thanks to its customer-focused proposition that benefits drivers too. With new cab operators joining the network in bucket loads and more partnerships on the horizon, the Dragons are no doubt wishing they’d managed to snag investment while they had the chance.
