Queues, always unwelcome, are even more frustrating when you are running late for a train and need to buy a ticket. Masabi could signal the end of ticket queues with its ‘ticket machine in your pocket’ app. As the leading developer of mobile ticketing technology, it allows passengers to buy and display tickets on most mobile phones  – not just smartphones.

Founded in 2002, the company works in partnership with the likes of thetrainline.com and is deployed with operators including Virgin Trains, Chiltern Railways, First Capital Connect and many more. Backed by venture firm m8 Capital to the tune of $6m over two rounds, the company is racking up industry awards, and is starting to work within the United States with transit agencies such as MBTA Boston and MTA New York.
