13. DIY Kyoto
Innovative wireless portable energy monitor
Founders: Richard Woods, John Sawdon Smith, Greta Corke
The DIY Kyoto trio are all graduates of the Royal College of Art. Launched in 2005, the company’s Wattson device is the height of eco-friendly chic. It measures energy usage in currency or watts by sending wireless signals straight from the mains supply, allowing you to keep track of your own carbon footprint from the comfort of your living room. Currently riding a green wave of media interest, Richard says the nationals have been calling daily this year. The Wattson was also voted one of the top ten gadgets by Stuff Magazine.
