Founder: Max Buchan
Year founded: 2019
Website: valarian.com

The idea behind Valarian began when founder Max Buchan started his career as a cofounder and CEO of cryptocurrency investment firm CoinShares.

After opening offices in London, Paris, and New York City, Buchan discovered there was a growing problem with digital sovereignty and data ownership in global communications.

From there, he founded Valarian (previously Worldr) and kicked off its mission of safeguarding sensitive data for enterprises and governments. It gives organisations complete control and oversight of their data, especially in light of increasing cyber threats, with the average number of cyber attacks per organisation increasing by 30% in 2024.

One standout feature is the zero-trust architecture that can be integrated with popular communication platforms like Microsoft Teams, WhatsApp and Slack – helping businesses manage and secure their communications while staying compliant with data protection laws.

Another impressive aspect that the judges liked is Valarian’s ability to adapt data storage based on geographical rules, which keeps sensitive information safe from external threats while ensuring companies keep full ownership of their data.

Since its launch and feature on the Startups 100 2023 Index, Valarian has been able to position itself successfully in the market through both its solution and understanding of its customers’ needs, surpassing client expectations.

“Extensible deployment, granular access controls, comprehensive data encryption, and full data ownership are essential for secure collaboration,” Buchan said. “Valarian is the only platform that provides these features while maintaining the speed and convenience we’ve come to expect from Microsoft Teams, Google Meet, Zoom, and others.”

As it continues to expand, Valarian is set to make a lasting impact on how organisations communicate securely, making it a deserving addition to the Startups100 Index.
