Tech Award Nominee In recognition of the inventors that are boldly going where no startup has gone before to create new, groundbreaking technologies. Go to award Founders: Kianoush Nazarpour, Hadi Heidari, and Siming ZuoYear founded: 2021Website: neuranics.comWhether wearable smart watches or cutting-edge VR headsets, the world is increasingly embracing human-machine interaction. Yet, for all our progress, the sensors at the core of this technology have barely evolved. Most need skin contact to function, are easily disrupted by motion or skin tone, and suffer from very short battery life. In other words, our devices still don’t fully work for us. Enter Neuranics, the Scottish deeptech startup that’s unlocking a new way to read the body. The company’s breakthrough lies in a nifty technology called tunnelling magnetoresistance (TMR). These sensors are capable of detecting minute magnetic fields generated by the body’s muscles and heart. It’s an ultra-sensitive, low-power method of measuring biosignals that can be done over clothes, for more comfortable and accurate monitoring. The founders’ story began not in a boardroom, but in university research labs. Around this time, major consumer tech and XR players were chasing the holy grail of seamless gesture recognition. The Neuranics team realised their breakthrough could end this quest. So, while rivals focus on refining existing electrodes or light sensors, Neuranics sought to lead an emerging sensing category – one that captures the body’s natural magnetic activity, rather than relying on light or contact.Building a company around such advanced research, however, was no easy feat. Early on, Neuranics had no external funding, operating on little more than conviction and ingenuity. The founders built prototypes in-house and engaged directly with undisclosed Tier 1 consumer electronics groups on proof-of-concepts to validate the technology. This determination paid off. In 2025, the business was named a CES Innovation Award Honoree after it delivered its first live demonstration of the Magnetomyography Magnetic Sensor, proving it can move into commercial applications. This groundbreaking innovation is one reason it’s also a nominee for our inaugural 2026 Startups 100 Technology Award. From tech breakthroughs, to startup milestones. After achieving its first revenue in 2024, early 2025 for Neuranics saw the close of a £6.2m seed round, adding to a previous £1.9m in pre-seed funding and a Scottish Enterprise innovation grant in 2024.The funds will support a bold but clear goal. By 2030, says the team, they want their sensors integrated into millions of devices worldwide, enabling seamless human-machine interaction, and “unlocking entirely new ways for humans to interact with machines across fitness, XR, and beyond”. We’ve got a sense that could soon be realised.View the full Startups 100 Index for 20261. Omnea2. HIVED3. MAGIC AI4. OXCCU5. Lightyear6. Neuranics 7. Hormona8. Burbank9. Better Dairy 10.
