Whether you are one, or you’re moaning about one, Britain is obsessed with cyclists.

More of us are cycling for work, fitness, or fun, to the point that local councils have been awarded £24bn for the creation of “strategic and local roads”, including cycle lanes, across the UK.

That fanaticism means the number of premium bikes on the market is growing. As well as mountain, road, and hybrid, wheelheads can now choose to have a folding bike, an electric bike, or even a cargo bike. The price tag for many of these can be in the thousands. And if you’re spending a small fortune on a 10-speed, you want it to be looked after properly.

This brings us to Bikebook, an online directory for booking bike services and repairs. As keen cyclists themselves, founders Jake Fieldsend, Ryan Elson, and Sam Elson knew the frustration of trying to find a bike shop, and constantly found themselves making endless phone calls to local mechanics. It was only after setting up the business in 2020 that they heard the other side of the story.

“We first launched as a free platform to connect cyclists with workshops,” says the team. “But we quickly saw a deeper issue. Mechanics were losing hours to phone calls, paper diaries, and unsuitable software, when they should have been at the bike stand.

“In a sector where every booking counts, this inefficiency directly translates into lost revenue, missed opportunities, and unnecessary stress.”

Shifting gears, the trio decided to build Workshop by Bikebook, a workflow management system they describe as “purpose-built for the cycling industry”. It can help bike shops schedule appointments, maintain customer profiles, and generate quotes and invoices.

Joining Bikebook in the breakaway are a number of impressive partners including the Association of Cycle Traders, the National Bicycle Dealers Association, and triathlete Alistair Brownlee. After securing angel investment in 2023, the firm raised a further £205k one year later.

But Bikebook saved its sprint finish for 2025. Last year, the company reached the break-even point, a milestone that the founders say gave them “confidence and validation that our platform creates real value for workshops”.

Mechanics were losing hours to phone calls, paper diaries, and unsuitable software, when they should have been at the bike stand. In a sector where every booking counts, this inefficiency directly translates into lost revenue, missed opportunities, and unnecessary stress.

At the same time, the Brighton-based team began scaling overseas, onboarding businesses in North America and Australia. Now across three continents, Bikebook is hurtling full speed towards 2030, when it aims to be supporting the majority of bike shops worldwide.

Setting up a global startup? For the Bikebook team, it’s as easy as riding a bike.
