Try this entrepreneur origin story on for size.

In 2021, Ellie Brown broke her ankle. During her recovery, she realised that what had previously been simple, thoughtless tasks, like putting on socks or buttoning a shirt, had turned into time-consuming and frustrating challenges.

It was a momentary glimpse into what life is often like for people with disabilities — the available products and services aren’t usually designed for you, and even when they are, they’re not serving you well enough. As Brown, a fashion design graduate, puts it, today’s adaptive clothing lines are “often clinical, unattractive, or unaffordable”.

Galvanised, Brown rolled up her sleeves and set out to change that by starting Recondition, a clothing brand to finally answer the unmet design needs of millions of disabled customers.

Together with a fitting group of six disabled fashion-lovers, Brown has co-designed items that she describes as “ensuring real-world functionality, while remaining fashion-forward and size-inclusive”.

Still building its early customer base, the company is starting with denim, a material with broad appeal that Brown cannily views as a stepping stone to scale up.

As a young founder with no manufacturing experience or funding, Brown faced her hurdles.

“Suppliers were hesitant to work with an untested brand, and minimum order quantities felt impossible,” she recalls. “I was learning everything from scratch: fundraising, building supply chains, and proving credibility in an industry that often overlooks disability-focused design.”

It wasn’t easy. But Brown managed to find partners and backing through a savvy mix of accelerators, UK support networks, and startup competitions. Notable funding sources include an Innovate UK grant and a successful crowdfunding campaign last July.

In August 2025, Recondition launched its first adaptive denim product at London Fashion Week — a pair of jeans with clever accessibility features like easily-reachable pockets, and pull tabs for family members or carers. It was a landmark moment for Brown.

“After years of research, co-design with disabled people, and overcoming startup hurdles, seeing our jeans come to life was a huge milestone,” she recalls. “It proved that accessible, stylish clothing doesn’t just exist in concept — it can be made, marketed, and celebrated.”

I was learning everything from scratch: fundraising, building supply chains, and proving credibility in an industry that often overlooks disability-focused design.

Recondition’s product lines may be small, but the Manchester-based business has big ambitions for the next half-decade.

“We will be a leading inclusive fashion brand in the UK, with a full adaptive clothing range, thriving community events, and international reach,” says Brown. Watch this space.

99. Bikebook

Bikebook takes the hassle out of bike repairs by connecting cyclists and workshops through a smarter, smoother booking system.

Founders: Jake Fieldsend, Ryan Elson, and Sam Elson
Year founded: 2020
Website: bikebook.co.uk

Whether you are one, or you’re moaning about one, Britain is obsessed with cyclists.

More of us are cycling for work, fitness, or fun, to the point that local councils have been awarded £24bn for the creation of “strategic and local roads”, including cycle lanes, across the UK.

That fanaticism means the number of premium bikes on the market is growing. As well as mountain, road, and hybrid, wheelheads can now choose to have a folding bike, an electric bike, or even a cargo bike. The price tag for many of these can be in the thousands. And if you’re spending a small fortune on a 10-speed, you want it to be looked after properly.

This brings us to Bikebook, an online directory for booking bike services and repairs. As keen cyclists themselves, founders Jake Fieldsend, Ryan Elson, and Sam Elson knew the frustration of trying to find a bike shop, and constantly found themselves making endless phone calls to local mechanics. It was only after setting up the business in 2020 that they heard the other side of the story.

“We first launched as a free platform to connect cyclists with workshops,” says the team. “But we quickly saw a deeper issue. Mechanics were losing hours to phone calls, paper diaries, and unsuitable software, when they should have been at the bike stand.

“In a sector where every booking counts, this inefficiency directly translates into lost revenue, missed opportunities, and unnecessary stress.”

Shifting gears, the trio decided to build Workshop by Bikebook, a workflow management system they describe as “purpose-built for the cycling industry”. It can help bike shops schedule appointments, maintain customer profiles, and generate quotes and invoices.

Joining Bikebook in the breakaway are a number of impressive partners including the Association of Cycle Traders, the National Bicycle Dealers Association, and triathlete Alistair Brownlee. After securing angel investment in 2023, the firm raised a further £205k one year later.

But Bikebook saved its sprint finish for 2025. Last year, the company reached the break-even point, a milestone that the founders say gave them “confidence and validation that our platform creates real value for workshops”.

Mechanics were losing hours to phone calls, paper diaries, and unsuitable software, when they should have been at the bike stand. In a sector where every booking counts, this inefficiency directly translates into lost revenue, missed opportunities, and unnecessary stress.

At the same time, the Brighton-based team began scaling overseas, onboarding businesses in North America and Australia. Now across three continents, Bikebook is hurtling full speed towards 2030, when it aims to be supporting the majority of bike shops worldwide.

Setting up a global startup? For the Bikebook team, it’s as easy as riding a bike.

98. Pioneering People Ltd

Pioneering People connects verified flexible workers with businesses who’ll pay them fairly and on the same day as the job.

Founder: Rita Kastrati
Year founded: 2022
Website: pioneering-people.com

When the world shut down in 2020, Rita Kastrati started volunteering at the North Kensington Community Kitchen. She was in her final year at university and could commit 50 hours a week to deliver meals to people who were shielding and couldn’t leave their homes.

At first, it was just about dropping off food, but Kastrati quickly realised people needed conversation too – and the lack of fair, flexible work kept coming up. Many of the people she met were in and out of employment, or struggling with health conditions that meant they couldn’t commit to fixed schedules.

She never forgot about those chats, and two years later, Kastrati founded Pioneering People. It’s a platform that supports flexible workers, connecting them with businesses that pay on the same day and offer good wages, transparent conditions, and respect for the work they do. The startup guarantees that workers won’t pay any fees, and that they’ll be paid a minimum rate of £14 per hour.

The platform handles everything from instant ID verification and right-to-work checks to same-day payments, and facilitates direct messaging between workers and businesses.

Kastrati tells us that the biggest challenge in creating Pioneering People was bringing so many essential features under one roof and making them work seamlessly together. She overcame this by building carefully, testing constantly, and refining every detail until the platform felt simple and reliable.

Pioneering People is backed by a group of angel investors whose experience spans across recruitment, technology, and retail. The platform has also established partnerships with innovative, fast-growing brands such as Thursday, Jumpstart, Pan ‘n’ Ice, Mixtons, and others who require instant access to high-quality but temporary staff.

Looking to the future, Kastrati’s goal is for Pioneering People to become the go-to platform for gig work, reshaping the industry by ensuring businesses have instant access to reliable workers, and that workers have fair opportunities and easy access to their earnings.

97. Over the Moo UK

Over the Moo UK sells premium plant-based ice cream in the form of portion-controlled bites covered in dairy-free chocolate.

Founder: Simon Goodman
Year founded: 2021

As the number of people opting for plant-based food options grows, so too does the demand for dairy-free sweet treats. This is where Over the Moo UK, which sells premium plant-based ice cream in the form of bite-sized chunks, comes in.

The growing bite-sized ice cream category was initially pioneered by a number of well-known disruptor brands, before multinationals like Ben & Jerry’s and Magnum got involved. But prior to Over the Moo UK, it was very difficult to find plant-based bites.

Aussies might already be familiar with Over the Moo as an Australian ice cream brand that was founded in 2015. And, in 2021, after he fell in love with the vegan ice cream during a trip down under, Brit Simon Goodman gained permission to take the idea home and launched Over the Moo UK as a separate company with a wholly new product in mind.

While its Australian counterpart sells tubs of ice cream, Over the Moo UK has developed its own distinct range of bite-sized ice cream chunks specifically for the UK market.

Goodman’s inspiration was in harnessing the nostalgic appeal of the iconic choc ice, but with dairy-free, sustainably-sourced ingredients (its coconut milk is sustainably farmed). Sold in sharing pouches, Goodman explains that his vision for the bites was not low-calorie or lower-grade, but instead, a premium treat in controlled portions.

Rather than exotic or innovative flavours, the startup prioritises simple classics, with varieties in vanilla, caramel, and chocolate. It’s an approach that’s worked – Over the Moo UK has built a loyal customer base, who buy its pouches from hundreds of indie shops across the country, including delis, food halls, and farm shops.

But the business hasn’t limited itself to home soil.

In 2024, Over the Moo UK grew its sales and listings in the UAE, in Spinneys, Waitrose UAE, and Kibsons, which joined the roster in 2025. Closer to home, there have been breakthroughs in Portugal and Spain, with stock listed in Continente and health food wholesaler Vegan Nutrition, respectively.

Looking to the future, Goodman’s aspiration is for his business to be a significant voice within the bite-sized ice cream movement.

Sampl helps brands run sampling campaigns that reach genuine shoppers and are fully trackable, measuring full-funnel impact in real-time.

Founders: Matt Huntly and Luca Spinella
Year founded: 2020
Website: sampltech.com

During the pandemic, Matt Huntly and Luca Spinella’s office-based sampling business stopped overnight. With shops and offices closed, they had to rethink how product sampling worked.

For years, brands had been handing out samples as a tactic for building awareness of their products, but with no real way of knowing who received them (people with a genuine interest, or freebie hunters?), what they thought of the product, and whether they went on to become genuine customers.

Huntly and Spinella had seen brands spend six-figure budgets on a sampling campaign, only to wait months for a report that offered little more than an unreliable snapshot of results.

It felt obvious that sampling could be digitised. If they could capture first-party data from sample recipients and track the outcomes of the giveaway, brands could finally see how effective their campaigns truly were, and fine-tune their future approaches.

Their business, Sampl, is the result. It’s a digital-first sampling platform that helps brands put products in the hands of the right people by sampling only to a qualified target audience, and then tracking the results in real-time. Every request is validated, every journey can be followed, and brands can see how many reviews, opt-ins and sales their campaign is creating. It’s the magic of sampling, made fully trackable.

Since launching, the Brighton-based business has built an impressive roster of over 250 clients, including giants Estée Lauder, NIVEA, Clarins, Royal Canin, Tony’s Chocolonely, and Colgate. It has also forged partnerships with The Hut Group, O2 Priority, and GLAMOUR, to name just a few.

In five years’ time, Huntly and Spinella’s aim is for Sampl be have become the world’s leading digital sampling platform. They plan to open offices in Europe and the US to support clients in those regions locally.

Compression socks are medically essential for people dealing with circulatory issues. But although they’re technically an item of clothing, they’re plain, clinical, and disconnected from how younger consumers actually want to style themselves.

Main Squeeze, a brand founded by Princess Ebi, is changing that.

After surgery, Ebi’s close friend developed lymphedema and stopped going out because she hated how her medical compression socks made her feel. Seeing her pull back from daily life to accommodate her medical wear revealed something bigger to Ebi – compression products just weren’t designed with their wearers’ confidence in mind.

This is where Main Squeeze enters the chat – born from the belief that those who need to wear compression socks should be able to feel good and look good. So far, its chic compression socks are available in bold red and yellow colourways, designed to be shown off, not covered up or hidden away.

With these products, Main Squeeze is tackling stigma and making compression wear accessible to all. It’s often associated with ageing or illness, but the brand is reframing it as something expressive, empowering, and suitable for younger wearers.

To get manufacturers – who didn’t understand why aesthetics mattered – on board with creating something both medically effective and design-led, Ebi brought real users into the product development process early. She worked with people living with conditions like POTS and lymphedema to co-develop prototypes, test their comfort, and refine the fit.

Main Squeeze operates primarily as a direct-to-consumer brand, but has built partnerships along the way, collaborating with creators and advocacy groups during Chronic Conditions Awareness Month, and winning the AXA Startup Angel Competition for 2025. The brand is also in early conversations with British retailers about future distribution opportunities.

In the future, Main Squeeze aims to be the leading lifestyle compression brand in the UK, and expand across Europe and North America.

Ebi’s vision includes a full product line, from socks to leggings and sleeves, all created with sustainable materials. She also has her sights set on building a global community platform that champions visibility and inclusion for people with chronic conditions.

94. SWURF

Swurf is a platform where remote workers can find inspiring, social spaces to work from on demand, while giving these venues a new revenue stream.

Founder: Nikki Gibson
Year founded: 2020
Website: swurf.co

One of the perks of more flexible working is the ability to work from spaces other than an office – but finding an energising, interesting spot can be tricky. This is where SWURF, the marketplace platform for spaces to work in on-demand, comes to shine.

The idea for SWURF came to founder Nikki Gibson in the midst of the pandemic. Friends and colleagues were struggling, not just with working from makeshift desks at home, but also with the loneliness of remote work. Hospitality venues were struggling too, with few customers coming through their doors.

SWURF looks to solve both of these issues at once. Based in Edinburgh, the platform connects remote workers with hotels, cafés, and community hubs across the city. It introduces workers to affordable, social, attractive workspaces, while enabling venues to gain revenue from their underused spaces and bring them back to life.

Gibson’s biggest challenge in launching SWURF was navigating a rapidly evolving industry as a non-technical founder, for whom the world of apps, booking systems, and platform design was completely new.

To overcome this, Gibson surrounded herself with talented technologists and designers who shared her vision, listened to SWURF’s early users, and iterated quickly based on their feedback. She invested significant time in R&D, testing different ways for venues and users to interact and generate revenue. This culminated in the launch of SWURF Pods – smart bookable spaces.

Since launching SWURF, the team has focused on strategic partnerships that validate its model and expand its reach. The business is working with Edinburgh International Airport and YOTEL Edinburgh, where it has launched and installed SWURF Pods. Other partners include Kew Green Hotels and brands like IHG and Hilton.

Gibson’s five year goal for SWURF is for it to become the go-to platform for on-demand spaces to work worldwide, with a goal to scale through the deployment of 5,000 SWURF Pods across the globe.

93. Meshed

Meshed is a business insurance broker using native AI to cut down on admin and hidden costs and ramp up fair insurance cover for SMEs.

See our guide to this year’s hottest new businesses and most exceptional founders in the complete 2026 Startups 100 index.

Founders: Mark Costello, Jake Wells, and Vincent Liu
Year founded: 2024
Website: meshedcover.com

Finding the right business insurance (and at a competitive price) is crucial for SMEs. This is where insurance brokers can help – but the process of insurance broking is filled with paper pushing, which takes time that translates into higher fees for SMEs.

Jake Wells and Mark Costello had previously worked together on an insurance broker business before the AI wave, and understood the problems within the industry. They teamed up with Vincent Liu, who was also keen to help solve the issues.

They knew that processing PDFs, managing emails, and completing repetitive data entry takes up much of an insurance broker’s time. The lightbulb moment came when they realised that these are the kinds of tasks that AI is brilliant at.

Inspired by this, they founded Meshed. It’s a small business insurance broker that uses native AI to process all the admin, freeing up human insurance brokers to spend more time working with their customers and winning new accounts.

As a result, SMEs only have to pay for their broker’s expertise and service (not their admin time), and so Meshed can charge just 10% commission, while traditional brokers may charge up to 40%.

This laser focus on the core work of insurance broking also means that SMEs get access to the best policies for them, and aren’t left underinsured (Allianz estimates that 80% of SMEs don’t have the right insurance cover, leaving them exposed to risk).

Meshed has completed a pre-seed funding round led by Haatch, which has brought deep operational experience that the founders say has been invaluable. Meshed has also brought Aviva on as a strategic investor, giving the business the ability to build its own products as it scales.

Getting authorised by the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) was certainly a key achievement in Meshed’s journey to date, but what’s the next stop? According to Costello, Wells, and Liu, the goal is to become one of the top ten largest privately owned insurance brokers in the UK.

Exceptional Founder Nominee

In recognition of the entrepreneur who has turned their own personal struggles or challenges into a force-for-good, leading the way for industry change and innovation.

Startups 100: Exceptional Founder Award

Founder: Natalia Pazzaglia
Year founded: 2023
Website: legacycompass.net

While the illness and loss of a loved one is something almost everyone will experience in their lifetime, end-of-life is still a taboo topic and, as a result, many families don’t know how to navigate through it. Making decisions when overwhelmed by the stress and emotion involved is difficult, and can have adverse, lasting outcomes.

In 2021, Natalia Pazzaglia lost her mum after a 16-year battle with cancer. Pazzaglia was a 33-year old professional, and caregiving had already presented her with difficult decisions.

With a background in business development and a desire to turn hard moments into something positive and helpful, she started studying the market, and realised that people are usually left to navigate loss and end of life without information or support.

This is why she created Legacy Compass, a digital platform that simplifies the process of end-of-life planning. With interactive storytelling prompts, it guides users step-by-step, helping them to have difficult conversations, make decisions, and find the right professional services when needed.

As well as helping people to just get through it, Legacy Compass is designed to help users share memories and nurture their relationships with loved ones through hard times. Pazzaglia has built a community around the platform, where users can find other people who relate to the experience of grief.

Legacy Compass serves both individuals and businesses who want to support their employees. It currently works with legal and consulting firms with 300 to 1,000 employees, and this year will be working with insurance and pension providers as well. Legacy Compass has also partnered with cancer charities, and is focused on social impact investment.

As well as securing a spot on the Startups 100 Index, we also shortlisted Pazzaglia for the 2026 Startups 100 Exceptional Founder Award in recognition of her success in turning her personal struggle into a force for good.

As a solo, first-time founder, Pazzaglia counts receiving investment from Bethnal Green Ventures as one of her biggest achievements to date. But looking to the future she plans to expand her operation across Europe, helping even more people to find their way through incredibly difficult times.

91. Loom

Loom is an upcycling app that helps users have their unwanted clothes redesigned into something special, instead of sending them to landfill.

See our guide to this year’s hottest new businesses and most exceptional founders in the complete 2026 Startups 100 index.

Founder: Daisy Harvey
Year founded: 2022
Website: theloomapp.com

Daisy Harvey was working for a fast fashion company when she walked past a group of schoolchildren protesting climate change. Handing out flyers, the children asked passers-by what impact they were going to have on their future. It was then that Harvey decided to change course and try to make a difference.

From her work, Harvey knew that people rarely wear all the clothes they own, and that huge amounts of clothing end up in landfill, causing damage to the planet. She wanted to help prevent this.

Harvey’s solution is Loom, a clothing upcycling app that enables users to send unwanted pieces of clothing to designers, who’ll redesign them into unique pieces that users will want to wear again and again.

To use Loom, users upload a photo and description of their piece of clothing to the app, and detail what they hope to turn it into (or, if they’re not sure, they can leave the designers to suggest their own ideas).

There are currently over 100 vetted designers on the Loom app. Those who want to take the project on get in touch to discuss it, and once an idea is approved, the chosen designer sends a quote to be accepted and paid for. Next, users ship their clothing to the designer or hand it to them in person, and wait to receive their rejuvenated piece back.

Harvey refers to herself as a non-technical founder who’s building a fashion tech business. With a strong vision but little technical knowledge, she applied to several accelerators and grants to help her learn the ropes, created a no-code minimum viable product (MVP), and found investors in the tech space to back her up.

Loom went on to win Innovate UK’s Creative Catalyst grant, and beat 500 other applicants to win the H&M Global Change Award, which came with a €200k grant and a year’s worth of business support and connections.

Excitement about Loom has been growing, as the startup has partnered with Oxfam on an exclusive upcycled collection, and has been featured in Vogue, ELLE, Marie Claire, Harper’s Bazaar, The Telegraph and The Guardian.

Looking ahead, Harvey’s ambition is for Loom to become a leading global fashion app, the go-to B2B upcycling solution, and the largest community of independent designers in the world.
